Identity Thieves often manage to steal your identity through rather unsophisticated means. They can find paperwork in your garbage that contains sensitive information. Sometimes these cyber criminals will even contact you, pretending to be a representative of a company you trust and ask for your personal information.
Be skeptical of unusual requests for your information; in fact, never provide personal information to someone contacting you. Be mindful of where you're providing your information. Be cautious when disposing of paperwork with personal info; shred your discarded documents when possible.
Officer Denise Schrecengosi with the Crime Prevention Unit said to shred everything. “Anything that has your address, your phone number, your name,” she said. Protect your social security number. Most places will only ask for the last four digits. Be skeptical if anyone asks for the full number.
