On February 11, the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), a division of the Department of Defense, notified possible victims of a data breach on its systems, stating that social security numbers and other PII may have been compromised. At this time, there is no evidence that PII has been misused, and in the wake of this incident, DISA is going to provide free credit monitoring services.
According to the 4iQ Identity Breach Report 2019, government agencies were the largest growing exposed industry in 2018, suffering a 291% increase in data breach incidents from the year prior.
This is the second data breach the DOD has disclosed in the last two years. In October 2018, more than 30,000 DOD military and civilian personnel had their personal and payment card details exposed via a security breach at a third-party contractor.
